Hands That Nurture — North Country Devotion, Then and Now

The spirit of John Brown is at root in Hands That Nurture: Perceptions of Masculine Devotion, a new exhibition by artist and environmental psychologist Shawndel N. Fraser, opening June 6.

John Brown and his Raiders were not only abolitionists — they were tradesmen and craftsmen whose devotion to justice was expressed through their hands, their labor, and their willingness to put their bodies in service of something greater than themselves.

That spirit is the founding root of Hands That Nurture: Perceptions of Masculine Devotion, a new exhibition by artist and environmental psychologist Shawndel N. Fraser, opening June 6, 2026 at the Downtown Artist Cellar in Malone, New York.

Fraser has spent years in long-term field engagement with North Country tradesmen and craftsmen, exploring how men express devotion, care, and tenderness through skilled labor and everyday action. Through hand cast sculptures and documentary-style photography, the exhibition makes visible a kind of masculine devotion that rarely receives public witness — the kind that builds, sustains, tends, and protects without fanfare.

Fraser is a JBL community collaborator and longtime friend of the organization whose work asks us to look for John Brown’s spirit not only in history, but in the hands of the men working in our communities today.

Exhibition Dates: June 6 – June 27, 2026
Location: Downtown Artist Cellar, Malone, New York
