John Brown Lives! has been accepted into the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, the only global network of historic sites dedicated to connecting past struggles to present-day human rights work. The Sun Valley News highlighted the truly meaningful milestone: read their article here.
This honor comes as we celebrate our 25th year preserving the legacy of John Brown and interpreting his life and mission at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid, NY. From his time in North Elba to his daring raid at Harpers Ferry, Brown’s commitment to racial justice resonates deeply today—and this recognition affirms the global relevance of that legacy.
As Parusha Naidoo of the Coalition notes, Sites of Conscience “serve as bridges between past and present, memory and action,” and we are proud to stand among such powerful institutions.
We thank Assemblyman Billy Jones for his support and share his enthusiasm for what this means for the North Country. The article ends with a great quote from him:
New York State Assemblyman Billy Jones said, “Congratulations to John Brown Lives! for being accepted as a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience! As the only global network of historic sites, museums and memory initiatives, it is an incredible honor that a North Country organization was chosen as a Site of Conscience to help tell the stories of resistance from the past and turn memory into action. This designation will help further their mission to honor John Brown’s fight to end slavery and follow his footsteps to promote freedom and equality and make connections at an international scale.”
