Tuesday Talks: Pilgrimages to the John Brown Shrine

Loading Events

Adirondack Life writer Amy Godine explores the history of pilgrimages to John Brown’s shrine, with a focus on the yearly visits of black activists who from 1921 into the 1970s honored John Brown’s memory with speeches, sermons and song.  Of special interest is the vexed relationship of the black pilgrims with the heads of the notoriously exclusionary Lake Placid Club and what Brown meant to a white patrician elite and to advocates for racial equality and civil rights.
