Join us on May 14th to honor our Spirit of John Brown Freedom Awardees and to mark the 100th anniversary of  “John Brown Day,” when Black leaders from Philadelphia–NAACP made their first pilgrimage to lay a wreath on Brown’s grave. Gather for a day of celebration and commemoration.

Co-founder of Rage Against The
Machine, Audioslave and Prophets
of Rage, Tom is widely known as a
barrier breaking guitarist who
continues to push the limits and
prove the transformative power of
music. Throughout his remarkable
career, Tom has collaborated with
everyone from Wu Tang Clan to
Johnny Cash. With his guitar
leading the way, he continues to
create powerful alloys of different
genre.

Karen Davidson Seward

Artist
Memorial Field for Black Lives

A graduate of Rhode Island
School of Design, Ren launched
her freelance graphic design
studio, Davidson Design, Inc. in
New York City in 1987. The brutal
slaying of Ahmaud Arbery early in
quarantine 2020 galvanized her to
begin writing memorials for victims
of police violence. She continues
to develop and re-imagine the
Memorial Field for Black Lives,
now in its third year.

Tiffany subscribes to the servant
leadership model and uses
disruption through inclusion as a
way to influence her dance
company’s culture. She is now in
her 17th year with the
internationally acclaimed NYC based
EMERGE125 and her 18th
year in residence at the Lake Placid
Center for the Arts. She is one of
the first artists to receive a John
Brown Lives! Fellowship for Artists,
Scholars and Activists

John Brown Day Evening Reception at Smoke Signals

Join us at Smoke Signals on Main Street in Lake Placid from 6-8 PM to continue the celebration! Hors d’oeuvres will be served and cash bar will be open.
